I’m Black Like That – Prison Poetry
November 14, 2011 ¤ Listed in : Hewritt Dixon - Poetry
I’m like Cuervo Black…smooth and dark.
I’m like the muddy waters of the mighty Mississippi.
You can’t see whats beneath it, but a world of activity is going on deep down below.
Yeah, I’m black like that!
I’m like a black hole…that “void” they say exists in space.
Others have tried to rob me of my identity.
I wonder if they even see me at all.
Yeah, I’m black like that!
The wealth of this country is due to the sweat of my brow,
and the strength of my back.
Yeah, I’m black like that!
I’ve endured slavery,
Jim Crow and segregation.
Yeah, I’m black like that!
I’m at home, be it in Wall Street or Harlem,
Spitting out game or conducting my business.
Yeah, I’m black like that!
I dominate Sports Arenas, run Fortune 500 Companies,
cook with a gift that one might think they were eating Manna from heaven,
Yeah, I’m black like that!
Hair thick as lamb’s wool…feet as brass.
Yeah, I’m black like that!
I’m proud of who God made me.
I’m proud of who I am.
My heritage is rich with culture, and oh, so versatile.
Enduring struggles and persevering in times of distress.
Forever fanning the flickering flames of hope.
Yeah, I’m black like that!
